Carpet Pet Stains

Pet stains on carpets and rugs are some of the most frequently encountered problems with these textiles. If they are taken care of immediately as they happen, most of these stains can be removed without too much difficulty. However, often they are not discovered until long after they have occurred and damage has set in.

Besides the associated odor problem, discoloration, dye change and/or loss are common maladies stemming from these stains mellowing with age. Damage to the floor covering’s actual construction can result in severe cases.

  • Discoloration can occur for several reasons: urobilins, the urinary pigments that normally give urine its color, may act as dyes on their own. Some medications, such as sulfasalazine, are actually medicinal dyes that can pass through the pet’s system and attach to the fibers. As with prepared foods for humans, food coloring is added to many pet foods for esthetic reasons, which has caused much discoloration in floor fibers. Very often these are considered permanent color damage, and non-reversible.

  • Dye change may develop – at times almost immediately – due to the pH factor of the pet’s urine. This type of color change is usually reversible unless neglected.

  • Bleaching doesn’t usually set in until succeeding weeks and months, as dyes undergo permanent color change. This can be magnified by photochemical reaction, such as from direct sunlight. This is considered permanent damage to the flooring’s color, and has caused much replacement.

When the aforementioned color problems are encountered, all is not lost. The vast majority is correctable by a skilled color repair specialist; by using advanced spotting and dyeing techniques, the avoidance of replacement or patching becomes a reality. Pet stains are repairable—and without a cutting knife!
