Repair of Hallway Yellowing |
For a number of years there has been increasingly more said about the yellowing of carpet. There is a yellowing that is not related to the browning seen in cleaning or water restoration. The conventional restorative acid treatments seem to have little or no affect. This is a yellowing that shows up specifically in traffic areas, such as hallways.

The current fashion trends are for lighter and many times, light to medium gray colored carpets. It is true that these colors show dust, dirt and general soiling more quickly. But all too often, this hallway yellowing will not respond to even restorative cleaning. Some do, yes; however, a large percentage do not. Microscopic examination in the field reveals that many times there is little or no fiber surface buildup. A percentage of these discolorations can be explained by oxides, high pH, chemical residue, fiber finishes, or other curlpets; but, a large percentage are enigmas and defy these explanations.
All too often the problem encountered is color loss. Whether the cause is dye gasification, chemical damage, fading from light, fumes or heat, or simply wear, the result is the same. The problem has probably always existed, but the present trend of gray carpet colors has made it more noticeable.
The cost for repairing this type of problem can be surprisingly low. On commercial jobs, a common range of cost is from one to three times that of a restorative cleaning. As with cleaning, the moving of large and heavy furniture is not usually required. The carpet drys in a few hours. The procedure can be done during off hours with the affected areas ready for use the next morning. This avoids the disruption of normal business caused during replace, and for a fraction of the cost!
